I think the best way to make money in I.T. is to build yourself a SAAS business. Pick a solution widely used by business, and dive in. Go for something where the average billing is going to be 500/month or more per customer. Target SMB, MidMarket, and Enterprise. Build it in .NET.

I just had lunch with a guy who built a SAAS service company you never heard of, and he's worth about 100M. He started from scratch 10 years ago. Another guy I know makes 4M per year out of his apartment, with a dozen work at home employees.

The thing to do is start small, build the interface, and then adjust. I think a *me too* business would be fine. Because of the recurring subscription, each month your competitors are up for renewal. I'm actually in the process of vetting out some ideas.
