I spent some time on download.com checking out download statistics and reading user comments.
( Part of market research I am currently doing. )
Anything that is not totally free is voted down by large percentage of the people that write reviews.
This appears to be the case even with software that people use in their work or home office.
A lot of 'reviews' these days are one liners:
"It sucks" or "The product does what it claims to do."
The CNet 'reviews' are almost useless these days.
I think this attitude by the users causes software authors to cut corners in terms of quality and try to make money by sneaking search toolbars or just beg for it.
"Writing software takes time - please send me a few dollars."
I think Google has been very successful in 'educating' the general public to expect that all software should be free.
SUN also had an influence ( much smaller ) with their OpenOffice.
The difference: Google figured out how to make a lot of money giving away free software - SUN didn't.
Well ... the point of this post is to state something that I think most members already know:
People don't want to pay for software these days.
Unless they absolutely can't find any way around it
I am looking at my own desktop right now and see only couple of applications that I have bought during the last couple of years.
I have also spent very little money on online application subscriptions.
As far as I remember - I have only spent around $150 on a few very short lived subscriptions over the years.
I spent over couple of thousand dollars buying just development tools during the Client / Server days.
These days are never going to come back - so this is just a reminder to look for other ways to make money.
Making people pay to have their resume placed on StackOverflow is really an innovative idea.
( It doesn't matter what we think about one of the founders
P.S. I am sure this idea that writing software is not a big deal is spreading to the contracting market.
"I can get this complex open source software for free - Why should I pay you big bucks to just customize it?"
