I always thought that Australia didn't allow much immigration
That's been propaganda since Howard in the late '90s. "Stop the boats." "We will determine who comes into this country and the circumstances in which they come." All bullshit. While making a big fuss about a few thousand people coming by boat from Indonesia without permission (and he was right to stop them), he simultaneously allowed 150 thousand people per year to come by aeroplane. No-one knew this at the time. It was not reported. We found out later. No government since has reduced those numbers, instead they have slowly increased, 200K per year, 300K and now 600K.
and deported those that arrived shortly thereafter.
There is a huge legal industry in appealing against deportation, with much success in winning those appeals. In the public space it is "racist" to question any of it. So no they don't get deported. I don't know who funds all the lawyers.
Do they assimilate into your society and add value
No of course not. Theoretically they are filling the gaps in the "skills shortage" (which is caused both by companies no longer training employees and by governments no longer properly funding apprenticeship training). But the government lists of approved required skills for prospective immigrants include such vital skills as yoga teachers and chefs, as was exposed a couple of years ago. The whole thing is a crock of shit. Big companies want to import cheap labour. Government wants to import population because it increases GDP with no effort. They win, the populace loses.
Now these migrants are getting the numbers to have political clout. Muslims have mosques and are now proposing massive developments which are more than merely mosques. They are pushing for sharia law. Indians are having towns and lakes and intersections renamed in their favour. Chinese are more subtle but they influence export policy indirectly eg Australian government decisions that might adversely affect Chinese in Australia result in the Chinese government banning the export of goods into China. This has happened already. Wine and beef are two examples IIRC.
The government panders to all these groups. It's cringeworthy.
